“walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called”
Ephesians 4:1b (ESV)
A little different prayer blog today. I want us to think about Jesus, on the cross, and what He did for us that day. Using the symbolism from the movie Saving Private Ryan. The movie begins and ends with the elder Private Ryan visiting the grave of Captain Miller. Just before Miller died, he told Ryan, “Earn it.” He wants Ryan to live a live worthy of the sacrifice made for him.
Ephesians 4: 17-24 talks about the new life we are to live, because of what Jesus did for us on the cross. Ephesians 4:1 calls us to “live a life worthy of the calling” (NIV).
How do we reconcile the fact that we do not, and can not and should never try to earn salvation, with our calling in Ephesians 4:1 to walk in a manner worthy of our calling? What is our inspiration to work if we are not to earn? It is because we are not saved by works, but because our salvation calls us to work.
How can you earn something already paid? We are called to live our lives in a way that is worthy of the price paid.
How can we repay Jesus for His sacrifice? We cannot. But we can live our lives in a way that honors the price He paid. We can walk worthy.
When you come to the Lord, ask Him to guide us all in living a live worthy of His sacrifice for us. Ask Him to write on our hearts the desire to work for Him, to make Him known, to live out His mission for us.
